Americana Cherry Cola Review

Americana Cherry Cola

Brand: Americana
Flavor: Cherry Cola
Sweetener: Pure Cane Sugar
Size: 12 oz Bottle
Cost: $1.99
Purchased At: Rocket Fizz
Flavor Notes: Cola, cherry, smooth
Similar To: Sprecher’s Cherry Cola

I’m quickly becoming a huge fan of Americana sodas. I enjoyed their Honey Cream and I also enjoyed their Cherry Cola. Nothing beats a freshly made cherry coke/cola from a restaurant. While I have yet to find a bottled or canned cherry cola match that same grenadine-heavy enjoyment that you can find hand-made in popular eateries, Americana Cherry Cola is nonetheless an enjoyable and very good cherry cola. This lightly carbonated cherry cola is sweetened with Pure Cane Sugar and has a smooth cherry taste. The cherry flavor is right on queue, it’s not too strong, not too subtle but it melds well with the cola flavor. The carbonation is not too strong – it’s finely carbonated like a Sprecher’s soda if you’ve had one. If you’re a fan of cherry cola’s then you should make an effort to try an Americana Cherry Cola.

Faygo Rock & Rye Soda Review

Faygo Rock & Rye
Brand: Faygo
Flavor: Rock & Rye
Sweetener: Cane Sugar
Size: 12 oz Bottle
Cost: $1.99
Purchased At: Rocket Fizz
Flavor Notes: Sweet, Creamy
Similar To: Barq’s Red Creme Soda

If you’ve ever had a Faygo Original Rock & Rye, or a Barq’s Red Creme Soda, you will understand how difficult it is to describe the flavor of this soda. It’s not like anything else. Faygo Rock & Rye has been described as a “cream finished cola”, however I have a hard time detecting cola as a main or even base flavor of this soda. This is a smooth and enjoyable soda. The flavor is somewhere in between a cola, cream soda, and just a hint of a cherry and vanilla. Beyond that it is an extremely hard soda flavor to describe without experiencing it for yourself. It is a great and unique tasting soda, fun to drink, refreshing and tastes great. I’m not sure why it carries the name “Rock & Rye”, but it describes this flavor just as good as any other name would. Definitely worth a try if you happen to cross paths with a Faygo Rock & Rye.

Squamscot Cola Soda Review

Squamscot Cola
Brand: Squamscot
Flavor: Cola
Sweetener: Cane Sugar
Size: 12 oz Bottle
Cost: $1.99
Purchased At: Rocket Fizz
Flavor Notes: Nothing memorable, “not good”, almost undrinkable

I don’t want to sound too harsh here but Squamscot Cola is a soda best left in history or on the shelf. This is the second Squamscot soda that I have had and I’ve been pretty disappointed with both. They’re just not very good. First, they have a funny name. Second, their flavors are not very good. I could not finish this cola. I can finish just about anything, but not this cola and I love cola sodas. When the flavor of a soda is bad, they can cheat their way through it by over sweetening it. This wasn’t even the case with Squamscot Cola. It had neither a good cola taste nor did it compensate for the bitter and poor flavor with sweetness. It is entirely possible that I just had a bad bottle, if you’ve had a Squamscot Cola and had a different experience please comment.

Double Cola Review

Brand: Double Cola
Flavor: Cola
Sweetener: Cane sugar
Size: 12 ounce bottle
Purchased At: Little Dave’s Deli
Similar To: Empire Real Cola

Double Cola is made by the same company that produces Ski, a soda that I recently reviewed and really enjoyed. The last time I tried Double Cola was several years ago and I remembered liking it so I was excited to give it another go. After the first sip, I remembered what it was that I liked so much about it. Unlike a lot of the sodas I’ve tried recently, Double Cola doesn’t try to do anything too fancy or too gimmicky. It is just a really, really solid cola soda. The cola flavor is spot on, not too weak or too overpowering. I also really like the design of the soda’s label for it’s simple lettering and color scheme although it looks like that design may soon change. After finishing the bottle, I was trying to think of another cola that I had enjoyed this much and I wasn’t able to bring anything, instead going back and thinking of how I was going to get another bottle of this stuff. Double Cola may not do anything new or innovative, but it’s just a really great soda and that’s about all that matters to me.

Fentimans Curiosity Cola Review

Brand: Fentimans
Flavor: Cola
Sweetener: Sugar
Size: 9.3 ounce bottle
Purchased At: Old 52
Similar To: Moxie

Starting in 1905, Fentimans sodas have been made through a botanical brewing process that takes 7 days to complete. That tradition still continues today in all of their sodas including Curiosity Cola. I really like the presentation of this cola. It comes in a unique 9.3-ounce glass bottle with an old-fashioned looking label. The iconical Fentimans German Shepherd is printed on a sticker attached to the bottle’s neck. Fentimans Curiosity Cola is made with ginger and herbal extracts. This soda definitely has a strong flavor to it and is very full-bodied. The combination of ginger and cola flavors is unique and worth a try. In a way, it almost felt like the soda had too many flavors happening at once. It certainly is distinctive and not really similar to any other cola. Although the soda contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume, I can definitely see it appealing to those who prefer a more “spirited” beverage.

Kickin’ Cow Cola Review

Brand: Vermont Sweetwater Bottling
Flavor: Cola
Sweetener: Dehydrated cane juice
Size: 12 ounce bottle
Purchased at: Old 52
Similar to: N/A

Having only been a small child when Crystal Pepsi was released, I have never tried a clear cola. Needless to say, I was excited to give Kickin’ Cow Cola a try. From Vermont Sweetwater Bottling, the cola is made with no artificial colors and no artificial flavor. The label has a certain charm to it that lets you know this is definitely an old-fashioned soda from a small bottler. The label says that Kickin’ Cow Cola is “all natural soda from pure mountain water, natural flavors and dehydrated cane juice.” Although I’m left to wonder what all is included in the natural flavors, I’m certain that at least one of those flavors is cinnamon. Although the soda actually smells pretty similar to Coca-Cola, the taste is quite a bit different. The cola has a very strong cinnamon flavor to it. The carbonation is pretty light so the soda goes down easy and doesn’t have too much of a bite to it. If you’re looking for a unique cola, I definitely recommend picking up a bottle or two of Kickin’ Cow Cola.

Empire Real Cola Review

Empire Real Cola

First off, Empire Real Cola is a great cola. It’s right up there with other great colas including Double Cola, which is my favorite cola and something I’m not shy about claiming. We’ve all had colas before – Coke and Pepsi mostly, so what makes Empire Real Cola so good? I’d have to say the smoothness. I would say it’s close in taste to an RC Cola. The flavor and taste match the impression you get from the label – something with a bit of class, not right in your face or flashy about it – like I said, the taste matches the feel and impression of the label. It’s a pretty label and comes in a short bottle. The taste is smooth and sweet, that never turns bitter (like a Moxie or even Pepsi). There is just the slightest taste of roughness at the end, ever so slight, not to be confused with bitterness though… just a slight taste after each swallow that makes you think that Empire Real Cola has been gracefully aged. If you are a fan of cola soft drinks, especially real sugar colas, then you’ll want to get your lips on a bottle of Empire Real Cola.
