Thanks to the handy Cheerwine Finder, I was able to finally track down a few bottles of Cheerwine. This soda has been made since 1917 in North Carolina. Luckily, there are big plans for nationwide distribution. I say “luckily” because Cheerwine is a really great soda. The soda is dark red in color and is available in cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles. I was able to find some in glass bottles which was good because the glass bottle variety is still made with sugar unlike the plastic bottle Cheerwine which is made with corn syrup. The bottle is very minimally decorated with the Cheerwine logo on either side and the words “Unique Sparkling Soft Drink” printed on the neck. When I first tasted it, I was expecting something similar to a cherry cola and I wasn’t too far off. Of all the major sodas, I think Cheerwine is most similar to Dr. Pepper Cherry. The cherry flavor in Cheerwine is quite subtle and is masked somewhat by the soda’s high carbonation. While a lot of vintage sodas are fun just to try for the curiosity factor, Cheerwine is one that I can definitely see myself coming back to again and again. Hopefully the nationwide distribution isn’t too far off.
